Commentary:

My mother’s-mother’s family has had a couple reunions in a city in the southeastern corner of Kentucky. I picked up this specimen en route to just such a reunion in July of 1999.

This little gem came from a drink machine outside the store itself.

Mr. Pig is still working with his doctoral committee on his thesis. When he passes his oral examination, we can start using the “Doctor” title which he will so rightly deserve.

Texas Fizz

Store: Phar-Mor
Location: Raleigh, NC
Packaging: 2L

Commentary:

Phar-Mor went a different route in their naming of this particular drink. Though it’s clearly a ripoff of Dr. Pepper, they pulled a name from way out in left field somewhere.

Exactly what part about a “black cherry” soda reminds you of Texas, anyway? One has to wonder.

It’s amazing how long it took to find this popular imitation in CAN form.

Location: Sand City, CA

Commentary:

I obtained this beverage when I was on a business trip to San Jose. I had just finished attending (and speaking at!) the 2nd O’Reilly Perl Conference, and I was driving south from San Jose to the beautiful town of Monterey. I stopped at a grocery store (as I often do, when on a trip) just to see if they might have a previously-unobserved specimen. My efforts paid off.

Dr. Topper

Collection date: Sun, 2000-12-31 20:00
Store: Dollar General
Location: Jacksonville, NC
Packaging: can
Store Logo: Dr. Topper
Commentary:

I am not sure if this is an updated version of the Dr. Topper already in the collection, or if this is an entirely new (previously undescribed) species. It appears to be native to the “Clover Valley”, however.

One remarkable fact about this beverage: note that it was captured, in the wild, by my Mom! Very cool!
